Tankardstown House sits in the countryside at Rathkenny near Slane, less than an hour from Dublin and within easy reach of many of the Boyne Valley’s most important historic sites. At its centre is an impressive 18th-century manor house surrounded by parkland, woodland, formal gardens and a collection of restored estate buildings that now provide accommodation, dining and event spaces.

The property has evolved carefully from a private country residence into a destination estate while retaining the character of the original house. Tankardstown’s documented history stretches back through the Coddington, Morris and Blackburne families, with the estate later becoming the principal country seat of the Blackburne family. The present house incorporates an earlier neo-classical villa dating from the late 18th century, subsequently extended and refurbished during the 19th century.

Today, accommodation is spread across several distinct parts of the estate. Guests can stay in the Main House rooms and suites, choose one of the Courtyard Cottage Suites, stay in the restored eight-bedroom Lodge or book rooms within the repurposed Barn and Stables. That variety gives Tankardstown an unusual amount of flexibility, from romantic overnight stays to family gatherings, wedding accommodation and larger group visits.

The Main House offers the most historic experience, with Heritage Rooms, State Rooms and larger suites furnished in an elegant country-house style. The Courtyard Cottage Suites offer a more relaxed option and are particularly useful for families and guests travelling with dogs. They open onto the central courtyard and provide easy access to the walled garden, while selected cottage and stable accommodation is specifically designated as dog friendly. The estate’s extensive woodland and parkland make Tankardstown particularly appealing for a countryside break with a pet.

The Lodge adds another layer of accommodation. Restored as a private eight-bedroom retreat with its own lounge and dining area, it works well for groups who want to stay together while retaining the comfort and services of the wider estate. Nearby, the Barn and Stables have been converted from original outbuildings into additional guest rooms, preserving the estate layout while expanding accommodation capacity.

Food is a major part of the Tankardstown experience. Brabazon Restaurant is located within the Garden Village and serves everything from relaxed lunch and afternoon tea to more ambitious evening dining. Current dining experiences include a ten-course Entirely Tankardstown tasting menu, reflecting a strong emphasis on seasonal ingredients and produce linked to the estate and local suppliers.

The restaurant and gardens work especially well together. Guests can dine in the restaurant, take afternoon tea in elegant surroundings or enjoy the estate more informally through walks, outdoor seating and seasonal experiences. Tankardstown’s walled kitchen garden and growing spaces also form part of the wider food story.

Tankardstown is perhaps best known nationally as a wedding and celebration venue. Ceremonies can take place indoors in the Orangery or outdoors in the Walled Garden, with the Main House drawing rooms and terrace used for receptions before dinner and dancing in the Orangery. The Orangery can accommodate up to 250 guests, giving the estate the scale for a substantial wedding while retaining the intimacy of a private country house.

For wedding parties, Tankardstown can accommodate more than 100 guests across the estate, allowing family and friends to remain together rather than dispersing to surrounding hotels. This combination of ceremony, reception, dining, accommodation and gardens in one location is one of the estate’s strongest selling points.

The setting also makes Tankardstown a natural choice for anniversaries, milestone birthdays, private celebrations, corporate retreats and smaller gatherings. Current packages can combine accommodation and dining at Tankardstown with treatments at nearby Wellness at the Coach House, while guests can spend time exploring approximately 80 acres of woodland, parkland and walled gardens. A proposed dedicated spa and leisure development has also progressed through the planning process, although W.ie does not present that future facility as currently operational.

Tankardstown’s location is another major advantage. Slane Castle and Slane Whiskey Distillery are only a short drive away, while Newgrange and Brú na Bóinne, the Battle of the Boyne site, the Hill of Tara and other Boyne Valley attractions can be incorporated into a wider stay. Dublin Airport is approximately 45 minutes away, making the estate particularly accessible for overseas wedding guests and visitors touring Ireland.
