Inis Meáin Knitting Company is one of Ireland’s most distinctive fashion and craft businesses, based on the middle of the three Aran Islands in Galway Bay. Founded on Inis Meáin in 1976 by Tarlach de Blácam and Áine Ní Chonghaile, the company grew from a practical ambition: to create sustainable year-round employment on the island while building on the extraordinary knitting knowledge already embedded in the community.

That connection to place remains fundamental. Inis Meáin is a small, Irish-speaking island shaped by Atlantic weather, limestone walls, fishing traditions and generations of resourcefulness. The company draws directly on that environment, reinterpreting the patterns, textures and practical clothing of island life rather than simply reproducing a conventional tourist version of the Aran sweater.

Every Inis Meáin piece is designed, made and hand-finished in the company’s island workshop. The factory uses modern knitting technology, but deliberately avoids mass production. Machinery is reset repeatedly throughout the day to produce small runs and a broad range of styles, allowing the company to combine technical precision with the individuality and finishing associated with traditional craft.

The collections span menswear and womenswear, with sweaters, Aran knits, jackets, coats, cardigans, tunics, polos, T-shirts, vests and accessories. Traditional Aran cables sit alongside more restrained workwear-inspired designs, reflecting the difference between the highly decorated “Sunday best” sweaters once worn for special occasions and the simpler, darker garments historically used for daily work on the island.

Materials are central to the luxury of the brand. Inis Meáin works with premium yarns including cashmere, merino wool, alpaca, silk and European linen, selecting combinations that bring softness, texture, durability and depth of colour to the knitwear. The company has also developed and patented additional Aran stitch patterns over the years, extending the island’s visual language rather than treating it as a fixed archive.

In 2026 Inis Meáin marks its 50th anniversary. The current Spring/Summer collection continues the company’s approach of balancing heritage with innovation, introducing new stitch structures, contemporary silhouettes and lightweight yarn blends while maintaining the principle that every garment is made on the island. The business remains the only knitwear factory on the Aran Islands and one of the largest employers within the small Inis Meáin community.

The Island Shop offers one of the most unusual retail experiences in Ireland. Located alongside the head office and workshop on Inis Meáin, it gives visitors the opportunity to buy knitwear in the place where it is actually created. Opening hours are intentionally limited so the team can focus on production: from April to September the shop opens Wednesday to Friday afternoons and on Saturday, with Monday and Tuesday visits available by prior appointment. From October through March, weekday visits are by appointment only.

For customers who cannot travel to the island, the online store carries the collections worldwide and the brand is also represented by specialist retailers internationally.
