About
Gilford Castle Estate
A privately owned Victorian Scottish Baronial castle and 207-acre estate beside the River Bann, restored as an exclusive-use retreat for luxurious stays, private dining, intimate events and deeply personalised experiences.
Gilford Castle Estate is one of Northern Ireland’s most distinctive private estates: a beautifully restored Victorian Scottish Baronial mansion surrounded by ornamental gardens, mature woodland, meadows and riverbank landscape near the village of Gilford. Rather than operating as a conventional hotel, the castle is offered as a highly personal, exclusive-use experience, with stays shaped around the guests, the estate and the pace of life they want to create while they are there.
The house was commissioned in the 1850s by Benjamin Dickson, a successful linen merchant whose family played an important role in Gilford’s industrial development. He appointed Glasgow architect William Spence, who gave the building its romantic Scots-Baronial character: rugged stonework, turrets, multi-gabled elevations, oriel windows and interiors rich in carved oak, decorative plasterwork and stained glass.
Gilford Castle entered a new chapter in 2019 when Robert and Adrienne Moffett became its custodians. Working with artisans, craftspeople and conservators, they undertook an extensive restoration that sought to preserve the building’s historic character while returning it to life as a private home and luxury estate. The result is deliberately individual rather than hotel-like, with antiques, bespoke textiles, restored fireplaces, decorative craftsmanship and a strong connection to Ulster’s history and design traditions.
During an exclusive estate stay, guests have the castle and its surroundings to enjoy as their own private world. Bedrooms and suites are individually designed, reflecting different chapters in the house’s history through antique furnishings, richly patterned fabrics, four-poster beds, fireplaces and carefully restored architectural details. Many rooms have private bathrooms, while accessible guest suites and step-free or ramp access to key parts of the castle are also available.
The experience extends far beyond the bedrooms. Guests can spend time in the library, drawing room, music room, studio and dining room, enjoy private whiskey tastings beside the fire or simply settle into the slower rhythm of the estate. Dedicated household staff can be arranged, including butler and housekeeping services, while concierge planning, personal guides and private airport or helicopter transfers can be organised around the stay.
Outdoors, the 207-acre estate follows a broad meander of the River Bann. Nature walks lead through woodland and meadows, while the river and grounds provide opportunities for fishing, wild swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding. Tennis, archery, falconry and shooting can also be arranged, alongside picnics, guided excursions and off-site golf at leading Irish courses. Many experiences are bespoke and need to be planned in advance.
Food is treated as an extension of the estate itself. Private dining draws on pasture-fed meats, seasonal fruit, herbs and ingredients from the grounds, including honey from the estate’s own hives and eggs collected onsite. Gilford Castle also works with local Northern Irish producers, while guided seasonal foraging can be incorporated into a guest itinerary for those who want a closer connection to the land.
Gilford Castle is also available for carefully selected weddings, private gatherings and corporate events. Its approach is intentionally intimate: the estate says it prefers events involving tens rather than hundreds of guests. Private soirées, art exhibitions, literary evenings, classical recitals, curated tastings and bespoke retreats are all part of the programme, allowing the house to function as a cultural setting as well as a place to stay.
Sustainability and conservation form a significant part of the current stewardship. Native planting, lightly managed woodland and meadow areas, pollinator planting and wildlife habitats have been introduced across the estate. Restoration and furnishing have also drawn on local expertise and materials where possible, including Ulster-woven carpets, hand-finished textiles and traditional joinery.
Gilford Castle Estate is not a property visitors simply arrive at for a casual look around. Stays, events and experiences are arranged by consultation, with the team building an itinerary around the purpose of the visit. That sense of privacy is part of its appeal: guests are invited to experience a restored Irish country estate as a temporary home rather than as a busy public attraction.
Why W.ie chose Gilford Castle Estate: Gilford Castle Estate represents exactly the kind of privately owned place W.ie should help people discover: historically important, beautifully restored, highly distinctive and operated with a clear point of view. It combines heritage, luxury accommodation, private dining, culture, nature and tailored experiences within one extraordinary estate, yet remains far less obvious internationally than many of Ireland’s established luxury names. For W.ie, it is a strong example of the platform’s purpose — uncovering remarkable Irish places that deserve to sit alongside the country’s best-known destinations.
