About
Folláin
A family-run West Cork food business creating jams, marmalades, relishes, curds, breakfast toppers and beautifully presented gift boxes from its home in the Cork Gaeltacht since 1983.
Folláin is one of Ireland’s best-established independent preserve makers, with a story that began in a West Cork kitchen more than four decades ago. The name comes from the Irish word for “wholesome”, and that idea has remained central to the business as it has grown from small-batch beginnings into a nationally recognised Irish food brand.
The company was founded in 1983 after Máirín and Eithne Uí Shiadhail discovered a shared love of food, preserving and traditional recipes. The first Folláin product was grapefruit marmalade, made from a recipe that had been passed down through Eithne’s family for around 100 years. That first batch was prepared in Peadar and Máirín’s West Cork kitchen before being brought to market, creating the foundation for the business that followed.
Demand grew quickly. Folláin’s early production centred on hand-preparing fruit and cooking jams and marmalades in the family factory in Cúil Aodha, and one of the company’s first major commercial breakthroughs came when Superquinn placed an order for 100 cases. As the range expanded, Folláin moved into larger purpose-built production while maintaining its connection to the Cork Gaeltacht and the family behind the recipes.
Today the range extends well beyond the original marmalade. Traditional jams and spreads sit alongside citrus marmalades, savoury relishes, curds, caramels and gift collections. Folláin also developed its “Nothing But Fruit” range for customers looking for preserves without added refined sugar, using fruit and grape juice to deliver sweetness while retaining the flavour and texture associated with a traditional preserve.
More recently, the company introduced Spoonfuls, a fruit-and-seed breakfast topper designed for porridge, yoghurt, pancakes and granola. That willingness to develop new products without losing sight of the traditional preserve-making roots is one of the reasons Folláin has remained relevant across several generations of Irish households.
Gifting is an important part of the online offer. Customers can choose curated Folláin gift boxes or build their own selection from the available jams, marmalades, relishes and other products. The combination of recognisable Irish provenance, attractive packaging and practical everyday food makes the brand particularly suitable for gifts to family and friends at home or abroad.
The floral identity of the packaging also carries a family connection. Folláin’s presentation has become highly recognisable on Irish supermarket shelves, helping a relatively rural family business establish a national presence while retaining a distinctly warm, homemade visual character.
Folláin’s products are now widely available throughout Ireland through major retailers and independent stockists. The company’s own stockist directory includes Dunnes Stores, SuperValu, Tesco and gift shops across the country, while the online store allows customers to order directly from the brand. The business has also exported Irish preserves internationally since the 1990s, including to the United States and other overseas markets.
Awards have formed part of the Folláin story for decades. The company won its first Great Taste Award for Strawberry Jam in 1995 and has continued to receive recognition for its preserves since then. Sustainability has also become increasingly important, from early environmental initiatives to the company’s ongoing focus on responsible production and food made with straightforward ingredients.
Folláin remains based at Baile Mhic Íre in County Cork, within the wider Muskerry Gaeltacht region. Although the production premises are not promoted as a conventional visitor attraction or retail shop, the location is an important part of the story: this is an Irish food brand whose growth has remained rooted in the rural community from which it began.
Why W.ie chose Folláin: Folláin represents the type of Irish food business W.ie should make easier to discover — established enough to be trusted nationally, yet still rooted in a very specific family and place. The company has been making preserves in West Cork since 1983, continues to develop products in Ireland and has grown from a family recipe into a brand stocked across the country and exported overseas. For someone looking for an authentic Irish food gift, a quality breakfast preserve or simply a homegrown brand with genuine history behind it, Folláin is a strong W.ie recommendation.
