About

The Burren Perfumery

Where the wild landscape of the Burren becomes perfume, skincare and beautifully made Irish gifts.

Hidden among the limestone hills near Carran in County Clare, The Burren Perfumery is one of Ireland’s most distinctive artisan businesses. Established in 1972, it has grown from a small rural perfumery into a nationally recognised Irish beauty and fragrance brand while remaining firmly rooted in the place that inspires it.

The Perfumery is run by Sadie Chowen and Ralph Doyle with a local team, and its philosophy is refreshingly simple: make exceptional products, make them carefully, and stay connected to the landscape around them. Perfumes, natural and organic skincare, body lotions, soaps, balms and other products are made by hand on site in small batches rather than mass produced. In the Perfume Room, fragrances are blended, bottled, polished and packed by hand; in the Blending Room, organic creams and balms are produced in batches that are deliberately kept small.

The Burren itself is central to the brand. Its unusual limestone landscape, wildflowers, woodland and coastal air inspire scent families including Lost Garden, Atlantic Coast, Herb Garden, Grassland, Woodland and Irish Limestone. The result is a collection that feels unmistakably connected to the west of Ireland rather than simply carrying an Irish name.

The range extends far beyond perfume. Visitors and online customers can discover facial serums, day and night creams, cleansers, body lotions, organic Castile soaps, herbal balms, essential oils, candles, herbal teas and beautifully presented gift sets. The business sells directly to its customers through the Perfumery and its online shop, helping it retain close control over quality, presentation and the customer experience.

A visit is part shop, part working craft experience and part escape into the Burren. The Perfumery is open throughout the year and visitors can see products being made, explore the Perfume Room and Blending Room, watch the free audiovisual presentation on the flora and fauna of the Burren and wander through the organic Herb Garden, which was planted in 1999 to showcase native herbs and their traditional uses. Free guided tours are also offered during the busier summer months.

The rose-covered Tea Rooms add another reason to linger. Open seasonally, they serve freshly baked cakes, scones and pies alongside homemade soups, local Irish cheeses, salads, herbal teas and coffee, making The Burren Perfumery an especially rewarding stop while exploring County Clare.

Its story is also one of longevity and thoughtful growth. The Perfumery has been part of the Burren since 1972, and since Sadie Chowen took over the business in 2001 it has developed into a highly regarded Irish brand without abandoning its small-batch approach or rural roots. That balance of heritage, contemporary design, craftsmanship and sense of place is a large part of what makes it special.

Why W.ie chose The Burren Perfumery: W.ie is about showcasing businesses that give people a genuine sense of Ireland, and The Burren Perfumery does exactly that. It combines Irish-made products, skilled local craft, natural ingredients and a memorable visitor experience with one of Ireland’s most extraordinary landscapes. It is not simply somewhere to buy perfume or skincare; it is a business whose products, people and setting are inseparable from the Burren itself — precisely the kind of authentic Irish story we want visitors and locals to discover through W.ie.
